big idea donny deutsch reviewFirst Sentence: Big ideas are all around us.

Summary (from Barnes and Noble):   It’s the moment when you say, “There’s gotta be a better way.” It’s the moment when you ask, “How can I solve this problem”

Donny Deutsch’s hit CNBC show The Big Idea has put the spotlight on that ordinary moment and the people who have the courage and stamina to make their dreams come true.

Some people think a big idea is like a lightning bolt striking out of the blue that slams you in the head. But it’s hardly ever like that. The big idea isn’t an act of God. It’s an act of daily life. Simply put, the idea that will make millions starts with an observation.

A carpenter gets tired of almost losing a finger every time he slices a bagel. Bam! The Bagel Guillotine. A mother is frustrated that her pantry is full of stale food because the packages don’t close. Bam! Quick Seals. Howard Schultz notices on a trip to Italy that there are coffee bars on almost every corner. Bam! Starbucks. None of them had a barrel of cash. None of them had a ton of experience. They had a big idea and the will to follow through.

In The Big Idea, Deutsch draws not only on his own tremendous focus and expertise but on that of dozens of the successful entrepreneurs whom he has interviewed, to help you create your own enterprise. From the “Gut Check Moment” to “Mom Power,” The Big Idea takes aspiring entrepreneurs along every step of the way. The Big Idea is your roadmap to the American dream.

Review:  If you like the show, you’ll like the book.  Why? Because the book is more or less a paper version of the CNBC TV show of the same name.  Each chapter outlines multiple success stories built around a central theme to inspire and instruct would-be entrepreneurs or people who think they might have a big idea – just like an episode in a season would.  Nothing’s new, nothing’s super exciting.  The stories and anecdotes are entertaining and, at times, inspirational.  But the book lacks a big idea, it lacks substance beyond other people’s stories linked by loose affiliations formed into chapters, making it feel somewhat impersonal and all-talk, no-action.  The summary calls this book a road map.  I’d say it’s more like a map aggregator of other people’s map programs that gives you 47 different ways to get from point A to point B but glossing over the details.

Frankly, the most useful information in the book came at the end of each chapter in a list of references and websites to use for guidance.  These references are all useful to an entrepreneur, but it’s almost like Deutsch and his writer have to send you to other resources for valuable, detailed information because they don’t have anything to impart beyond a few words of inspiration.  I did enjoy the book and it was a nice light, inspirational read just for some of the stories which were entertaining and heartwarming, though.

{6/10 – The stories were sweet and inspirational, but it just felt like a plug for the TV show}
